This project will help improve literacy instruction and reading supports in primary schools in Ghana, Honduras, and Nicaragua by adapting and scaling the Unlock Literacy Learning Network approach, which has been successfully piloted in over 30 countries. The approach addresses the ways children in grades 1-3 learn to read, and how teachers, parents, and communities can help, regardless of their literacy level. It also helps communities build a culture of reading in school, at home, and in the community. The model incorporates reading assessments, teacher training, community action, and teaching and learning materials.

A consortium of institutions will implement the project: World Vision Canada, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, the School of Education and Leadership of the University of Ghana, and the Foro Social de la Deuda Externa y Desarrollo de Honduras.

Through collaborative action research, the consortium will work with teachers, reading camp facilitators, school administrators, ministry of education personnel, community members, and parents to adapt the Unlock Literacy approach within local learning systems. Technical experts will help to develop all research tools, resources, methods, and approaches for cultural appropriateness, language, gender-responsiveness, and inclusion.

The Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange selected this project from a global call for projects on scaling proven innovative approaches in education in developing contexts.

Resumen

The main objective of the research is to explore how community actors, including teachers, directors and officials of the Ministry of Education, parents and caregivers, and others, can work in partnership to implement the community-based literacy activities of the Unlock Literacy (UL) model. The model enables children, especially the most vulnerable girls and boys, in Honduras to participate in and benefit from literacy strengthening activities, such as reading camps.

Resumen

To respond to the problem of childhood illiteracy, during the last decade World Vision has implemented the Unlock Literacy (UL) project, which complements and supports the efforts of the Ministries of Education of the countries where it is implemented, to improve the learning processes in reading and writing of all children, including the most vulnerable. UL goes beyond the classroom and school to also strengthen children's literacy skills at home, as well as in other community settings where reading camps represent one of its most commendable efforts, increasing children's access to printed materials and educational stimulation sessions.

Resumen

This report gives account of the major research findings on the Unlocking Literacy (UL) programme which was implemented in primary schools and reading camps (RCs) in some selected communities. The project was aimed at ensuring that early grade teachers use child-centred pedagogies that will enhance children's literacy learning. The findings will serve as a guiding tool for teachers, education officials, parents, curriculum experts, and other education stakeholders including World Vision International (WVI) and other NGOs that are also into literacy development.
