During the 2000s, economic growth coupled with increased social investment reduced poverty and increased labour market opportunities in Latin America. However, some groups, in particular women and youth, were left behind — and the small gains they have made are in danger of being reversed by the current slowdown in growth.
The emergence of inclusive business models, or “purpose enterprises”, through which enterprises advance business objectives and development goals simultaneously, provide an opportunity to sustain the progress in Latin America. One example is the Certified B Corporation, a new type of enterprise that integrates social, environmental, and economic objectives within the core purpose of its business. In Latin America, almost 300 enterprises are certified as B Corporations, generating more than 20,000 quality jobs. This still represents a small fraction of business activity in the region. However, B corporations are expanding fast, and they may have a broader impact by motivating large companies to promote social and economic inclusion.
For this three-year project IDRC will partner with Fundación Impulsora de un Nuevo Sector en la Economía Sistema B (Sistema B), a regional organization currently present in 10 countries, to help promote a favorable ecosystem for the expansion of inclusive business. Sistema B works with enterprises, trade unions, researchers, foundations, and civil society to create alliances towards sustainable and inclusive development. The project will assess the impact of B corporations on economic opportunities for women and youth. It will support a platform to advance a research agenda on inclusive businesses, on the potential of B Corporations to contribute to social and economic inclusion, and on women’s leadership in B corporations. The project will produce teaching notes to incorporate inclusive business in university courses, as well as research papers, a book synthesizing key research findings, and practical tools targeted to B Corporations to enhance their social impact

![]() Innovation in companies with sustainability certification elements of its convergence Article B Lab is a non-profit organization that certifies companies for their social and environmental performance standards, transparency, and legal accountability. This article aims to identify how the innovation undertaken by companies certified by B Lab act on the sustainability activities. The sample obtained in the survey was composed mostly by microenterprises in the service sector. Results show the order of the “pillars” of positive sustainability as: a) social b) economic and c) environmental. The impact of innovations is more related to the economic pillar, followed by environmental. Ultimately the social “pillar” of sustainability was rejected. ![]() Biophysical identification in eco-centric enterprises Article The article introduces the concept of regenerative enterprises, defined as ecologically-embedded businesses that restore and regenerate degraded natural ecosystems, while building resilience and wellbeing of local communities. The research is place-based and draws on a multi-sited rapid ethnographic (MSRE) design. The site was a Chilean organic and biodynamic vinery. The work focused on understanding eco-centric practices and decision-making within the everyday world of the firm. A de-natured view of organizations is prominent in sustainable entrepreneurship research, situating the bio-capacity needed to propel ventures as a peripheral circle, despite the growing emphasis on environmental protection. ![]() Are B Corps inviting women to dance? : an overview of the representativity of women in purpose-driven companies Article Within a limited study sample (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia), B Corporations have a statistically higher proportion of women included in the workforce. Results show that B Corps from different countries are not very different among themselves. This suggests that the B Lab is currently successful in constructing uniform gender-representativity criteria for companies from all over the world despite cultural and contextual differences. B Corporations are purpose-driven companies that are certified by B Lab, and focused on stimulating businesses to improve their social and environmental practices. ![]() Hybridization movement of business through B corp certification Article This study provides an overview of the B Corps movement from an emerging country perspective, based on the profile and secondary data analysis of 45 Brazilian B Corps. B Corporation (also B Lab or B Corp) certification of "social and environmental performance" is a private certification of for-profit companies conferred by B Lab, a global non-profit organization. The phenomenon is drawing enough attention to support the proposition of the existence of another sector in the economy. Hybrid organizations such as B Corp enterprises raise new questions about accountability, control and legitimacy. Autor(es) : Rodrigues, Juliana, Comini, Graziella Lenguaje: Inglés |
