The Scaling Impact for Sustainable Development MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is an open-access course hosted through the SDG Academy.

Created by IDRC and its partners, it translates decades of research, evaluation, critical debate, partnership and program-learning experience into a practical, evidence-based resource for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, funders and students.

As efforts continue toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, the question is no longer whether solutions work, but how they can contribute to meaningful and lasting change at scale.

While many promising innovations show results, few reach enough people to create lasting change. Scaling is widely recognized as essential for sustainable development. Yet practical guidance on how to do it remains limited.

Recognizing this gap, IDRC co-developed the MOOC with a faculty of 27 experts from across disciplines and geographies. The aim is to strengthen capacity for scaling impact and to contribute to advancing the critical field of scaling science. The course draws on more than 50 years of experience in research for development, alongside insights from IDRC's global network of partners.

It makes an important contribution to scaling science, and reflects IDRC’s commitment to optimizing the impact of research and innovation.

The course combines theory, reflection exercises and real-world case studies across five modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to scaling science
  • Module 2: Scaling impact: beyond traditional scaling approaches to scaling pathways
  • Module 3: Four guiding principles of scaling impact
  • Module 4: Case studies
  • Module 5: Conclusion with a final exam

Drawing on real examples from across Africa, Asia and Latin America, the course uses case studies of IDRC-funded projects to take a deep dive into scaling impact in the context of agriculture, education, climate and water, the care economy, forced migration, impact investing and public policy.

Available in English and French, the course offers flexible learning for participants worldwide. Participants who complete the course and post-course survey will receive a verified IDRC Certificate.

The course invites learners to rethink traditional approaches to scaling and explore how research and innovation can contribute to lasting impact for the public good.
