This project will nurture emerging leaders in the application of research to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and specific development outcome areas of particular interest to IDRC. It will enable Universities Canada to develop and implement a merit-based, peer-reviewed scholarship program for doctoral students at Canadian universities to conduct field research in developing countries. Over three years, the project will provide 70 students from Canada and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with opportunities to participate actively in crafting innovative solutions to real-world problems and to build careers in relevant fields.

Building on previous iterations of this award, this project will strengthen the capacities of emerging researchers at Canadian universities, growing the cohort of researchers able to design, lead and carry out high-quality research in a development context. The inclusion in the program of students from LMICs studying in Canada, who will often return to their countries, coupled with the focus on supporting field research in the Global South, will deepen and strengthen collaboration between researchers and their organizations in Canada and the Global South on research that fosters development.
