In recent years, many health systems have shown diminished capacities both to confront persistent health inequalities and to improve population health outcomes. There is a need for localized and rigorous interdisciplinary evidence to inform health policies and practices for more equitable and responsive health systems. These needs are particularly acute in many countries in West Africa. In Côte d'Ivoire, for instance, many indicators continue to highlight high levels of maternal mortality, as well as a lack of high-quality primary care for women, children and youth, particularly in rural settings.

This project will support the design and implementation of a research agenda for health systems in the form of a national open research call. The call will support researchers across Côte d'Ivoire in addressing themes such as the governance of maternal health in rural areas, access to various types of medical care in rural settings, innovation in obstetrics in hospitals, and understanding links between traditional and modern medicine for women and children. Through effective participation of experts and key stakeholders associated with health systems, both in the design of the call and the uptake of research results, the project will directly support health-related development outcomes while strengthening capacity at key research institutions across the country.
