The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the fragility of health systems and the repercussions of health system failures from the local to the global level. It also showed the need to further invest in research evidence capable of strengthening health systems. More specifically, efforts to support localized and rigorous interdisciplinary research evidence are needed to inform health policies and practices for more equitable and responsive health systems.

These needs are particularly acute in many countries in West Africa. One example is in Burkina Faso, where internally displaced populations, particularly women, children, youth and people living with disabilities, have very limited access to water, food and health care, and have high levels of unmet health needs.

This project will design and implement a research agenda for health systems strengthening in the form of a national open research call. The call will support researchers across the country in addressing themes such as access to essential health services for internally displaced populations including access to mental health, reproductive health for adolescents, and children’s health services. Through effective participation of experts and key stakeholders associated with health systems, both in the design of the call and the uptake of research results, the project will directly support health-related development outcomes, while strengthening capacity at the national research council and at key research institutions in Burkina Faso.
