Understanding contributions of the scientific diaspora for Venezuela's future

 

Emigration from Venezuela has become one of the most significant migration phenomena of the 21st century. Driven by a complex interplay of political, economic and social factors, millions of Venezuelans have left their homeland in search of better opportunities and living conditions. This phenomenon has far-reaching implications, not only for Venezuela, but also for the host countries that receive these emigrants.

Venezuelan emigrants are dispersed across the globe, with significant populations in countries throughout Latin America, North America and Europe. Colombia, Peru and the United States are among the top destinations, each hosting hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans, including researchers who are being incorporated in diverse institutions and knowledge systems. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for addressing the challenges and leveraging the opportunities that arise. The Venezuelan diaspora, with its diverse skills and experiences, holds the key to potentially aiding in the recovery and future development of Venezuela. Through continued advocacy, economic contributions and support to science diplomacy and cultural preservation, they remain an integral part of the nation's identity and future.

This project aims to carry out a scoping study about different models that could potentially strengthen networks between the Venezuelan scientific diaspora and their home country, delving deep into the mechanisms and strategies that have proven effective in similar contexts. This involves a thorough investigation into the types of organizations that have successfully fostered robust connections, along with the instruments and tools they utilized to engage their respective diasporas in updating local research capacities producing and favouring the use of knowledge, and in engaging in international collaboration in areas of local interest.
