The rise of diet-related non-communicable diseases (DR-NCDs) in Eastern Africa is a growing concern. Countries like Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are facing high rates of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are exacerbated by unhealthy diets. These countries also experience a double burden of malnutrition, which underscores the need for stronger food environment policies to promote healthy dietary habits.

This project aims to strengthen food environment policies in Eastern Africa by enhancing regional collaboration, harmonizing nutrient profiling models (NPMs) and developing gender-responsive and transformative policies. It will engage key stakeholders, including governments, civil society, academia and the private sector. Through comprehensive training, capacity-building workshops and advocacy efforts, this initiative will lay the groundwork for harmonizing food environment policies across the region.

The development of a regional learning platform will further facilitate knowledge sharing on policy development and implementation, alongside the creation of a database for African NPM validation and scientific protocols. By addressing the root causes of unhealthy diets and promoting sustainable food systems, this project aims to reduce the burden of DR-NCDs and support healthier futures for all populations, particularly marginalized groups disproportionately affected by poor nutrition.

This project will be funded through the Catalyzing Change for Health and Sustainable Food Systems initiative, a co-funding partnership between IDRC and The Rockefeller Foundation.
