Latin America and the Caribbean have seen a steady decline of accountable governance and democracy, which is having a disproportionate impact on those who need state protection most. Women are being particularly targeted with a reduction in respect for their rights. Women’s groups have also seen a rise in hate speech and an increase in repression both at home and in public. Research is needed to investigate the socio-political dimensions of how repression of women is increasing at the regional and national levels, with an emphasis on Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Research into strategies to resist and claim fundamental human rights will also be undertaken.
This research will analyze the actors, forms and impacts of repression, organize and consolidate strategies to confront authoritarian threats and exclusion from diverse civic spaces, promote peer learning and capacity building of women's groups and strengthen their organizational capacities. The research results will promote vibrant civic spaces and communities as well as cooperation and collaboration across Latin America and the Caribbean.
