Leveraging Indigenous Knowledge to Create Jobs for Women in Rural Areas of Tanzania and Rwanda

 

This project aims to increase women's participation in economic activities, productivity, and employment options in poor rural communities in Rwanda and Tanzania. Researchers will identify indigenous knowledge, technology, and traditional enterprise practices in which women are involved. The idea is to find activities with potential for scaling up using information and communication technologies, for instance. Transforming women's employment The study will explore the potential of homegrown, or indigenous, approaches to innovation in support of rural employment. Researchers will use quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze how indigenous knowledge and technology can be used to transform rural women's employment. They will examine sectors and locations where these research investments may complement other investments in agriculture and enterprise development. The project will build research skills and knowledge to support Rwanda and Tanzania's employment and poverty reduction goals. The University of Dar es Salaam and the University of Rwanda will work in partnership to implement the project. Together, they will also build African capacity among researchers and senior officials to identify alternative, innovative opportunities for employment through training and networking. Their work will inform policy through discussions with policymakers. They will actively share project results.
