On improved cookstoves: the double benefit of energy efficiency and paid labour opportunities

This project will contribute to the large-scale adoption of improved cookstoves that will reduce the domestic burden of unpaid work for women and the carbon footprint of households while creating economic opportunities for women in rural areas. Improved cookstoves can reduce drudgery and thus increase opportunities for education, paid labour, and leisure, which help to empower women. The research will focus on Senegal and will examine the factors and mechanisms required to increase adoption of the improved cookstoves over a span of 36 months.

The project is a continuation of the successful initiative on Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW). GrOW West Africa's goal is to support applied, practical, in-depth research rooted in the local contexts of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal. Its aim is to help rebuild post-COVID-19 socio-economic systems in a way that contributes to women's empowerment and gender equality. Through partnerships with public and private sector actors, it seeks to identify and facilitate the scaling up of effective solutions to achieve women's empowerment and gender equality by reducing and redistributing domestic unpaid care work.
