Enhancing the promotion and protection of human rights and gender equality in Sierra Leone and Liberia

Since 2013, Kvinna till Kvinna has published a biennial survey on the rights of human rights defenders, their safety and security and the level of freedom they have in carrying out their work. The last edition has revealed a rise in narratives against gender inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa, which is fueling a hostile climate for those defending the rights of marginalized groups. In countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone, the women's rights movement has historically been vital in promoting peace and democratic values. However, the decreasing opportunities for women suggest a troubling trend that could jeopardize the fragile peace in these nations. Furthermore, there is a lack of detailed data and evidence on how to effectively support women and women-led organisations as agents for change in both countries. This lack of information limits the ability to effectively address the regression and potentially holds implications for democratic decline in the region.

This research led by Kvinna till Kvinna’s Liberia office in collaboration with 50/50 Group Sierra Leone aims to build capacity for rights defenders and their organizations to conduct analyses of risks and vulnerabilities and develop comprehensive strategies for promoting and enhancing dignity, safety and security. The research will also provide much-needed data and analyses on the threats, attacks and discrimination that gender-equality advocates face and the shrinking space for civil society organizations.
