This project will build on the accomplishments of the Catalyzing Policy Improvement in Africa – CPIA project, a two-year initiative aimed at improving maternal, newborn, sexual and reproductive health. CPIA Phase 2 aims to promote better health policies to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in Burkina Faso and Mozambique. This research project is based on national priorities and plans to strengthen local research and policymaking systems and institutions. It prioritizes gender equity in processes and outcomes.

In Mozambique, the team will conduct six implementation research studies to address challenges and improve access to sexual and reproductive health services and outcomes for adolescent girls. The project will develop new and adapted online training modules in implementation research, train eight new Mozambican MPH/PhD students to contribute to the research studies as part of their degree requirements, and produce at least six journal articles and datasets on the implementation research conducted.

In Burkina Faso, the team will set up a platform for a community-based data system on maternal and child health to better inform decision-makers, strengthen the quality of evidence-based interventions and improve health-care quality. This will support capacity strengthening of health professionals in data management across the health workforce and a strengthened community health information and surveillance system in the South-West region. It will also facilitate dissemination of case studies, policy briefs and published articles on the evidence to inform policymaking.
