Catalyzing Inclusive AI Research Network — South and Southeast Asia

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems often reinforce patriarchal norms, cultural hierarchies and opaque decision-making, particularly in sectors such as health, education, employment and public safety. For example, AI recruitment tools used by large companies have been shown to downgrade resumes that include indicators of women’s participation, such as attendance at women’s colleges or involvement in women’s organizations. Research has shown that inclusive values and community-centred approaches can guide the creation of AI applications that address pressing challenges and expand agency for women and marginalized groups.

This project will analyze AI's impact on gender equality, promote context-sensitive applications and strengthen collaboration among researchers and advocates. Operating through a regional consortium, it combines research, innovation and engagement with policymakers and civil society. By providing evidence, building capacity and delivering tools and recommendations, this project seeks to influence national and regional AI governance and support inclusive, gender-just development.

This project forms part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program, a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. AI4D aims to advance policy, innovation and leadership that promote safe, inclusive and responsible AI development, contributing to an ecosystem that improves quality of life across Asia, Africa and the wider Global South.
