Rwanda recognizes that technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) can effectively accelerate the realization of its strategic plans to transition from an agrarian economy into a globally competitive, knowledge-based country. At the same time, it also acknowledges that there is a critical gap in relevant knowledge and skills needed to ensure AI is developed and used responsibly, and that there is therefore a need to address gaps in AI research capacity, talent development and application of locally relevant solutions to key challenges in agriculture, health and the environment.
This project will provide inclusion training and mentorship for PhD and MSc students in AI research and innovation, strengthen inclusive inter-laboratory collaboration through joint research initiatives, implement exchange programs and facilitate lab visits for knowledge transfer, and promote industry-academia collaboration to connect research with practical applications. It will also develop evidence-based guidelines for policymakers on the responsible integration of AI technologies into sustainable development strategies, ensuring they contribute effectively to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
This project is a part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development program, a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support policy, innovations and expanded leadership to spur safe and responsible AI development and use in Africa.
