This project is a part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program, a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support policy, innovations and expanded leadership to spur safe and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) development and use in Africa. The vision of the new partnership is to support an inclusive, responsible AI ecosystem that improves quality of life for all in Africa and beyond.
The African Observatory on Responsible AI functions through dynamic partnerships and collaboration as a leading platform to advance responsible AI governance for the African continent. This project aims to build upon and enhance the African Observatory's role in a targeted and strategic manner through a series of activities focused on knowledge production and synthesis, policy influence and capacity strengthening.
It will explore the opportunities and harms that AI presents with respect to inequality in Africa, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and best practices related to the responsible and equitable development, deployment and governance of AI technologies and strengthening the capacity of policymakers to respond to emerging AI challenges and opportunities. The project will work directly with policy actors at national, regional and global levels to advance inclusive and responsible AI governance for the continent.
