While the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have emphasized aspects of gender equality in education, better data and improved approaches to data coordination are required to gain a deeper understanding of how and why particular girls and boys remain marginalized, excluded and discriminated against. Disconnections between available and needed data and between local diversity and national and global planning processes impede knowledge, policy and practice's ability to address inequities.

This project aims to address some of the disconnects and lack of communication that exists between different ways of thinking about gender, the groups that promote these approaches, and the practices associated with data generation and use in the fields of gender, education and inclusion. The initiative will use the Accountability for Gender Equality in Education (AGEE) Framework, emphasizing participatory reflection on data selection, gaps and plans for collecting and evaluating additional data. This will include creating capacity in examination of existing data, identifying missing data, and understanding the significance of these gaps and how to close them. Using collaborations in three countries (Malawi, Kenya, and Indonesia), the project will support cross-sectoral dialogue and reflection among stakeholders from key government ministries (including education, social services, gender and health) and civil society, including women's groups.

This initiative is supported under the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX), a joint endeavour between the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and IDRC to connect expertise, innovation and knowledge to help low- and middle-income countries build stronger education systems and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal on education.
