Coastal erosion, salinization of groundwater, freshwater lagoons, and soils, as well as declining soil fertility have adversely affected the environment and the livelihoods (mainly agricultural and fishing) of many populations across the globe. Agriculture and fisheries are some of the main livelihoods that are being adversely impacted by climate change in coastal communities such as those in the Volta Delta Region.
The forum created an opportunity to validate findings of the Stories of Change research initiative from the School of Public Health (University of Ghana) and to disseminate nutrition and food environment research and advocacy initiatives. Key research findings of studies shared at the Forum have contributed to increased evidence on stunting and anaemia and the food environment in Ghana, and a commitment towards change that will address food policy at the national level.
Objectives to improve child nutrition in Ghana have been accomplished thus far through training activities, establishment of the University of Ghana’s Nutrition Research and Training Centre, graduate training for 5 PhD and 17 MSc students, and creation of a community-based dietetic internship for North American and Ghanaian students with research projects on child nutrition.
A conversation about the IPCC report
The report notes key findings from one ISSER study which reveals that climate change is not a primary objective for the majority of climate-related spending of the National Climate Change Policy in Ghana, and that issues relating to climate change vary across government institutions.
This in-depth report reviews the study, which applied a cross-sectional approach to investigate how residents and households within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area of Ghana (GAMA) manage flood risks. It also worked to obtain useable information about transition to resilience within the study communities to prevent, prepare, respond to and recover from flooding events. Public adaptive measures can help reduce vulnerability to floods in GAMA.
