Communication Research Policy South (CPRsouth) has been active since January 2007, forming and encouraging policy intellectuals from across Asia and Africa through young-scholar academies, conferences and community and network facilitation. Surveys conducted in 2016 and 2018 helped identify 42 participants who had gone on to influence policy in their home countries.

The study constructs a usable predictive model for any given Medical Officer of Health (MOH) division, which is the smallest medical administrative district in Sri Lanka, by taking human mobility into account. It includes the importation of dengue into immunologically ’naive’ regions. Derived mobility values for each region of the country are weighted using reported past dengue cases.

National census information is time-consuming and expensive to collect. This research helps determine whether mobile phone data can provide a reliable, cheap proxy for census data within Sri Lanka, especially where post-conflict regions need more frequent data collection. Study findings suggest that socio-economic levels (SEL) can affect call detail records (CDR) data in a post-conflict, Sri Lankan setting. Analysis demonstrates the potential for telecom data to predict census features.

The project works to build an evidence base for digital policymaking in the Global South, through coordinated nationally representative surveys, using common methodology and common research instruments in order to better understand household and individual ICT usage. Data collection was conducted through face to face surveys of the 15-65 demographic in each country, with sample sizes of 2,000 each in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Cambodia and 5,000 in India.

After 13 years in operation, Communication Policy Research south (CPRsouth) redesigned and improved their Young Scholar (YS) program. Mentoring of conference presenters was enhanced through senior scholars who serve on the Board, and as well through experienced peers. Between conferences, greater use of case studies and interactive learning in tutorials was implemented along with increased use of social media connectivity.
