Conflict, displacement, and post-war recovery: the case of Passaiyoor East, Sri Lanka

​IDRC-supported researchers at Sri Lanka's International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) are exploring the recovery and resettlement challenges communities face in a post-conflict environment. The impact of war spans individual, family, and community losses. Survivors are often left without their land, homes, valuables, livelihoods, and networks. As they rebuild their lives, they face difficulties in accessing credit, health care, education, sanitation, and other services.

Conflict, Displacement and Post-War Recovery: A Community Profile of Passaiyoor East in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, looks at what strategies the war-affected fishing community located in the city of Jaffna used in its recovery and resettlement post-conflict. Researchers showed how the various resources available to the village – human, physical, natural, social, and financial – functioned cohesively to help the community recover after the war.
