Youth school-to-work transition in francophone Africa: A case study of Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Chad

 

According to recent estimates, between 2017 and 2030 Africa may contribute up to 25.9 million youth to the overall worldwide increase of 41.8 million young people entering the labour market. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development thus makes employment and decent work for young people an essential part of the new vision of development. Goal 8 in particular recognizes the centrality of the challenge of youth employment.

Young people’s transition from school to work is determined by individual characteristics, but also by factors beyond their control. A better understanding of the particular conditions in which this transition occurs is of crucial importance in designing tailored solutions to significantly reduce the proportion of young women and men who are not in school, working, or in training.

By strengthening analytical capacities, producing relevant analyses, and through stakeholder engagement, this project will provide useful insights to relevant actors to facilitate youth school-to-work transition in selected French-speaking African countries, including Cameroon, Chad, and Burkina Faso.
