Sustainable management of water catch basins for supplemental irrigation in Burkina Faso and scaling up in Mali and Niger

The goal of this project is to increase the climate change resilience of farmers in the Sahel through the sustainable and optimized management of catch basins for runoff water.

The project aims to assess the social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of building catch basins for runoff water on households and on the watershed. It will also seek to improve techniques to make catch basins waterproof and reduce evaporation.

Another objective of the project is to optimize supplemental irrigation management by integrating automated agricultural and weather information transmitted from remote sensing. Finally, the project seeks to scale up supplemental irrigation and its management. This will be achieved by building the capacity of agricultural stakeholders to sustainably manage catch basins and by involving policymakers at all stages.
