The Science Granting Councils Initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI) is a multi-donor initiative funded by IDRC, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, South Africa’s National Research Foundation, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the German Research Foundation. The initiative aims to strengthen the capacities of science granting councils in sub-Saharan Africa to support research and innovation that contribute to development. Capacity strengthening and technical support to the councils focuses on five strategic areas: research management; use of data and evidence in policy and decision making; funding of research and innovation projects; strategic communications and knowledge translation; and gender equality and inclusivity.
This project will provide training and other forms of technical support to the councils in specific areas of research management, including online grant management systems, research excellence (particularly the knowledge and use of tools such as the Research Quality Plus framework), research ethics, and emerging scientific practices (especially open data and open access). These initiatives will support SGCI’s focus on research management by strengthening the research and grants management systems and practices among the councils.
