Understanding the status of education system resilience is key for policy, planning and intervention. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has experienced multiple crises and disruptions — including conflicts, displacement and migration, political and economic instability and climate change —, which have affected and exposed the inadequate resilience of its education systems. There is a growing emphasis on education system resilience to ensure the systems are prepared to respond to current and future disruptions. This emphasis has become particularly important after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a limited understanding of what resilience means in theory and practice. It is also unclear what types of disruptions education systems may face beyond those already known in the MENA region.
This project will explore the meanings and practices of education system resilience, including consideration of the needs of vulnerable groups. It will also generate and mobilize evidence about potential future disruptions and effective approaches in addressing them. By doing so, the project aims to generate contextually relevant evidence about education system resilience and new disruptions; foster active collaboration among countries in the region, enabling the transfer of effective policies and practices relevant to education system resilience; and, ultimately, influence policy and practice, contributing to the adaptive capacity of the education systems and better education outcomes in the region.
This project is part of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange’s Observatory on Education System Resilience initiative with funding support from the GPE Knowledge and Innovation Exchange, a joint endeavour with IDRC.
