This project explores the differential impacts of the war in Ukraine with a focus on lower-income countries in Africa. Research will investigate the evolving impacts on food security, food access and food and commodity prices for vulnerable groups that are linked to the ongoing conflict and other recent shocks. This will be complemented by an analysis of the macroeconomic channels, impacts and potential responses to multiple external shocks for African countries.

The project will be carried out by two research teams. The first will lead research on the impact of commodity and food price shocks for agro-pastoralists and farmers, with a focus on three fragile African states. The second will analyze the macroeconomic impacts in Africa, including comparative analysis across eight countries with varying income levels. Together, the two components will provide gender-responsive and policy-relevant insights into approaches that enhance resilience to shocks for both low-income countries and vulnerable populations.
