Designing one-health governance for antimicrobial stewardship interventions

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a worldwide problem whose resolution depends on coordination of a collective worldwide strategy. Addressing the challenges posed by AMR through a one-health approach relies on intersectoral policy coordination ̶ across public health, agricultural and environmental policy networks ̶ internationally, making stewardship complex and necessitating new approaches to policy development. Identifying innovations in effective governance approaches would support the development of regional and national policies, regulations and laws to improve the global commons.

This project seeks to address these issues through a comparative analysis that will identify innovative international policy, legal and regulatory approaches in high-, medium- and low-income case-study countries. Design workshops will be informed by evidence emerging from the situational, institutional and systems analyses and engage decision-makers and local stakeholders. This will clarify the innovations and incentives that would foster a one-health approach to antimicrobial stewardship governance and policy at state and international levels.

This project is one of three which will receive funding support from IDRC through the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), an international platform that coordinates global funding to support collaborative research and action on AMR. Through the JPIAMR, IDRC has partnered with 30 other donor agencies to fund innovative research projects to understand the impact of interventions on the development and transmission of antibiotic resistance and to design, implement, evaluate and compare interventions that will have a true impact on reducing the development and transmission of AMR in and between the different one-health settings.
