Research laboratories in universities around the world have been instrumental in developing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to address pressing development challenges by assembling appropriate talents and providing testing grounds for technology. Such laboratories are beginning to emerge in Africa. This project seeks to support the Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Kenya as a multidisciplinary lab. It will strengthen capacities of early-career researchers while developing and deploying responsible AI innovations to tackle challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, the lab aims to develop solutions in environmental conservation, health and agriculture as well as novel machine-learning methods. The project will also contribute to strengthening the African AI ecosystem through collaboration with the network of AI for development laboratories and other stakeholders.

This project is a part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program, a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support policy, innovations and expanded leadership to spur safe and responsible artificial intelligence development and use in Africa. The vision of the partnership is to support an inclusive, responsible AI ecosystem that improves quality of life for all in Africa and beyond.
