IDRC and Global Affairs Canada launched Knowledge for Democracy Myanmar (K4DM) in 2017 to support the process of democratization in Myanmar. By supporting the production of relevant evidence and research, the initiative aims to nurture informed and meaningful dialogue in the process of democratic transition and to promote economic growth that benefits all women and men, regardless of their ethnicity. Working with other development partners, the initiative targets diverse and complementary entry points to strengthen analytical thinking and research capacity.

This project supports the capacities of three local policy research organizations, Advancing Life and Regenerating Motherland, the Centre for Economic and Social Development, and the Centre for Development and Ethnic Studies, to provide contextually relevant evidence and research to catalyze policy changes in Myanmar. It will strengthen organizational processes, including strategic planning, communications capacities, resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation, gender-sensitive human resource development, and sound financial management. It will also strengthen think tank capacities to produce high quality research and evidence based on sound organizational processes and research practices to influence policy dialogue and change in Myanmar.

More specifically, the project will strengthen office and research support infrastructure to improve organizational effectiveness (i.e. strategic and operational planning); establish a research quality mechanism to promote and ensure research quality; develop organizational processes to improve communication capacity and enable more effective policy engagement; and identify new collaborative opportunities through participation in national and regional networks.
