Building the Capacity of Future Leaders in Economics in West and Central Africa
This project will support the building of leaders of today and tomorrow in West Africa, a region where capacity for economic research and management remains very limited. A recent study by the Programme de Troisième Cycle Interuniversitaire (PTCI) showed that 87% of students stay in the region after graduation and work at universities, public institutions, think tanks, regional organizations, and the private sector. With this in mind, this four-year project will support the training of 510 students in applied economics in two cohorts, including 30 PhDs. At least 30% of the trainees will be women, to increase the supply of female economists in the region. The new program will build on PTCI's experience of competitive admission, class assignment to lecturers on a merit basis, a summer facility bringing all students together, and grouping PhD candidates on a designated campus. The program will introduce new elements to the design of previous phases: priority to students from fragile countries at the PhD level, and introduction of master's programs in gender and economic governance, and in natural resource management. This project will be implemented by PTCI, which supports economics departments in 18 countries of Francophone Africa to deliver quality graduate and post-graduate training. IDRC will contribute to the next cycle of PTCI activities alongside the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). New potential donors are also being approached for this cycle.

![]() Impact of land security on household’s agricultural productivity in Benin Article
This paper studies the impact of land tenure on household agricultural productivity in Benin. Compared to households without land ownership or right to land (squatters), results show that land certificate ownership increases by 0.238 the likelihood of investing in agricultural equipment, whereas customary law ownership increases this likelihood by 0.374. The study suggests that public authorities recognise customary rights and reinforce legal land institutions. In Benin, the agricultural sector contributes 32.7 percent on average of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and by 75 percent to government revenues. It provides approximately 70 percent of employment (2013). Author(s): Sessom, Shéïtan, Mbaye, Ahmadou Aly Language: English |
