According to the World Health Organization, about one billion people in lower income countries are served by health-care facilities with unreliable electricity supply or with no electricity access at all. More than half of the health-care facilities in Kenya struggle with insufficient or non-existent electricity access. This issue is especially prevalent in private primary health-care facilities, which serve as the first and nearest point of care for most of the population in rural and remote areas. Renewable energy solutions can contribute significantly to resolving the issue of insufficient or absent electrification, but they are expensive to install and maintain.

This project seeks to gather insights that will enable the design of a set of financial products aimed at driving access to renewable energy in Kenya’s primary health-care sector. By collecting and analyzing data from providers of renewable energy solutions and private primary health-care facilities, the project will estimate their willingness and ability to pay for financial products designed specifically for renewable energy solutions. By collecting data from local financial institutions and development funders, the project will have a better understanding of their interests in and requirements for investing in renewable electrification of primary health-care facilities in Kenya.

Ultimately, this study aims to design a robust, evidence-based financial mechanism to attract private investment and sustainable financing for private, primary health-care electrification in Kenya, ensuring improved health outcomes and clean energy access.
