AI4GH: Innovation hub in Latin America and the Caribbean on using artificial intelligence to improve sexual, reproductive and maternal health
In lower income countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, indicators for sexual, reproductive and maternal health are not on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being. The issue is particularly pronounced for vulnerable groups such as women, adolescents, Indigenous populations, rural populations, Afro-descendants, migrants, people with disabilities and LGBTIQ+ people, among others.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are increasingly used to address these unmet sexual, reproductive and maternal health needs and to strengthen health systems more broadly. When designed appropriately, these solutions can help equitably address health challenges such as increasing costs, demographic and epidemiological transitions, the double burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, and strengthening health promotion and disease prevention strategies. Despite the promise of AI to improve sexual, reproductive, and maternal health outcomes, there are important ethical, legal and social risks that need to be appropriately managed, mitigated and governed.
This project will support an implementation research network on responsible AI innovations to advance sexual, reproductive, and maternal health and rights across Latin America and the Caribbean. Responsible AI innovations are defined as those that are ethical, inclusive and equitable; that respect human rights; and that contribute to environmental sustainability. This project will provide financial and technical support to selected AI researchers and innovators to strengthen research quality, integrate social and gender analysis and position the results to achieve influence and optimal scale.
This project is part of IDRC’s Artificial Intelligence for Global Health (AI4GH) initiative, a five-year CAD15.5 million investment to strengthen health systems by leveraging contextualized responsible AI solutions.
