The African Climate Change Fellowship Program Phase III

Climate change and climate variability are significantly impeding development in Africa. The Economic Commission for Africa argues that scientists and policymakers must learn to better manage climate risks and to integrate climate change considerations into future development strategies. To do so, scientists and policymakers must develop deeper knowledge and capacity in the area of climate change science. This project will address those gaps to help reduce Africa's vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change. The African Climate Change Fellowship Program Phase III (ACCFP) will offer learning, research, and training opportunities to African professionals, researchers, and graduate students. The program's goal is to advance scientific knowledge that can inform climate adaptation planning and policy in Africa. The project will support three strategic actions. The program team will: -synthesize, publish, and communicate research findings from earlier phases; -design and offer fellowships based on four research themes: climate change and water, climate change and gender, climate change and green growth, and economic analysis of adaptation; and, -incorporate the fellowship program into the offerings of the Institute of Resource Assessment at the University of Dar es Salaam for long-term sustainability. Expected results include: -30 African experts in climate change science, policy, and teaching; -journal articles and thematic synthesis papers; and, -empirical evidence to guide adaptation planning and policy in Africa. The program will link the existing network of fellows, alumni, and participating organizations to policymakers to support knowledge exchanges and to stimulate adaptation action.

Climate perceptions, impacts and responses : a synthesis of lessons from eight African countries

Climate perceptions, impacts and responses : a synthesis of lessons from eight African countries

Study

The paper is a synthesis of research undertaken by recipients of the African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) fellowship awards. It outlines the coping and/ or adaptation strategies employed by pastoralist communities in the case studies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Benin and Tanzania. Pastoralism in these regions has evolved in response to the climatic variability over a long period. Adaptation strategies adopted by the rural communities (Nigeria) around small-scale water management (rain water harvesting and surface water protection) are also relevant to pastoralist communities. Research in Zimbabwe focused on factors that contribute to understanding how different households respond to climate variability induced hazards.

How climate change influences the disease burden : the case of meningitis in northern Benin and malaria in Zimbabwe

How climate change influences the disease burden : the case of meningitis in northern Benin and malaria in Zimbabwe

Study

The paper uses two case studies to investigate the effects of climate change on health: meningococcal disease and meningitis in Benin, and malaria in Zimbabwe. After elaborating on the nature of climate sensitive diseases, a number of recommendations are made in order to reduce occurrences and increases brought about by climate change. Location-specific manifestations of climate change determine interactions with, and effects on disease prevalence such as malaria, meningitis, and trypanosomiasis. Water borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery could experience a resurgence through a greater reproduction of different vectors (mosquitoes, flies).

Climate change and food security in Africa

Climate change and food security in Africa

Study

The paper is a synthesis of research undertaken by recipients of the African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) fellowship awards. Researchers investigated food crop production and farmer/fisher responses to climate change in Cameroon, Mali, Morocco, Tanzania and southern Africa. The report looks at projected impacts of climate change on food security, analyses farmer responses and barriers to adaptation, and concludes with some recommendations. Identifying the policy options available to address adverse effects is a first step. Agricultural extension services can provide a bridge to appropriate adaptation measures.

Climate change impacts for ecosystems management in Africa

Climate change impacts for ecosystems management in Africa

Study

The paper is a synthesis of research undertaken by recipients of the African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) fellowship awards. The papers focus on: Lake Chad, a transboundary water resource; the Cameroon coastline and socio-economic impacts of sea level rise; the Kenya coastline and mangrove ecosystems; Senegal experiments in soil fertility; Togo energy sector and forest resources and; Zimbabwe land use change and environmental degradation. A major challenge for Africa is lack of continuous, systemic data on ecosystems. The few vulnerability assessments point to the need for ecosystems protection, reforestation with “climate-smart adaptations,” integrated land-use and development planning, as well as activities to improve resource use technology.
