African artificial intelligence research awards to catalyze innovative communities

Every day, Africa’s burgeoning community of data scientists, machine learning specialists and researchers is exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute to tackling local challenges. Communities of local experts aim to raise the bar of machine-learning teaching and research in Africa so it can be world class. These communities support young researchers to acquire skills, strengthen their talents and drive new development-oriented innovations.

This project will catalyze the ecosystem of innovators who are deploying AI in Africa. Through small grants and a mentorship program, the project will support early-career and junior researchers to develop AI innovations to address development-focused challenges and receive mentorship from networks of experienced practitioners. This project will also support the sustainability of ongoing research communities that help make AI training accessible across the continent.

This project is part of the four-year AI for Development in Africa (AI4D Africa) program, a joint endeavour of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and IDRC. The AI4D Africa program supports policy, innovations and talent to spur responsible AI development in Africa.
