Africa faces development challenges that impact multiple sectors. Major shocks and stressors have adversely impacted community livelihoods and service delivery. The education sector is one of the most prone to system-level shocks, as was revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the growing disruptions to education systems and the increasing emphasis on strengthening their resilience, there is limited evidence about the status of education system resilience on the African continent and what it means in theory and practice.

This project will examine education system resilience in selected countries in Africa by exploring its meanings and practices and potential future disruptions. More specifically, the project will examine existing initiatives and innovations that address education system resilience and the extent to which they consider the needs of vulnerable groups. It will also explore future shocks, stressors and risks affecting education systems. The project aims to generate contextually relevant evidence about education system resilience and potential future disruptions through literature review, interviews and stakeholder workshops. It also aims to strengthen the understanding of relevant stakeholders about education system resilience, as well as inform policy and practice to enhance the resilience and preparedness of education systems to different disruptions on the continent.

The project is part of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange’s Observatory on Education System Resilience and is funded with support from the GPE Knowledge and Innovation Exchange, a joint endeavour with IDRC.
