In response to rapidly evolving digital opportunities and threats, the development of effective public policies and regulations is imperative to foster trust in digital economies and to safeguard against vulnerabilities in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). This project is designed to enhance AI governance across the African Union (AU) member states by adapting and implementing the existing AU data governance frameworks, developing sector-specific guidelines and fostering an environment conducive for responsible adoption and use of AI.
The project will: develop and implement guidelines for the responsible adoption and use of AI in health, youth, gender, social protection, welfare and education through consultations with African stakeholders and experts; develop frameworks for accountability and transparency by establishing an oversight and redress mechanism for AI development and deployment in Africa; implement the AU data governance framework to ensure alignment with responsible AI practices; and foster sustainability and enforcement of AI governance by establishing and supporting networks of AI policy advocates.
This project is part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program, a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support policy, innovations and expanded leadership to spur safe and responsible AI development and use in Africa. The vision of the new partnership is to support an inclusive, responsible AI ecosystem that improves quality of life for all in Africa and beyond.
