Myanmar think tank launches 2020 Annual Peace and Security Review
Published by the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS), the review offers insider information, in-depth analysis, and a nuanced understanding of the behaviour of more than two dozen key actors in 2019 and early 2020.
The country’s peace process remained at a standstill in 2019, but there were increased incidences of conflict in parts of Rakhine, Chin, and Shan states, MIPS reports. In mid-March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced further delays to peace talks.
The data used for the review is derived from an advanced monitoring system developed by MIPS to track and record conflict and peace-related events in Myanmar. The degree of detail of the data, which is collected and presented at the township level, allows the institute to identify significant patterns and trends, such as the acceleration or deceleration of armed conflict in specific regions. The institute complements its analysis with information collected from its expansive network of sources and several research projects.
Support from Knowledge for Democracy Myanmar is helping to make the institute’s data and analysis more widely available. The report’s launch in Yangon on July 7, 2020, including comments from a panel of experts, was live-streamed on Facebook.
