Announced in Glasgow during the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, this initiative will use research to build resilience, address knowledge gaps and boost the climate crisis response across the Global South.

There is an urgent need for targeted development research that meets the scale of the climate crisis and that is inclusive of research voices from the Global South. Countries in the Global South are the most affected by climate change, and the least able to afford its consequences. With climate change increasingly and disproportionately affecting the world’s most vulnerable people, there is a critical need for systems-level, action-oriented research to enable a more climate-resilient future for everyone.

The CLARE partnership recognizes that efforts to respond to the climate crisis are constrained by the under-representation of voices from the Global South in research and knowledge ecosystems. Localized, evidence-based actions help vulnerable people withstand the impacts of a changing climate and make vital contributions to inform international responses. CLARE’s emphasis on action-oriented research will help generate evidence of what works, what does not, and how to better adapt to drive responses to the climate crisis before it is too late.

CLARE addresses the critical need for climate action now, while also anticipating future needs. This partnership reflects IDRC’s Strategy 2030 vision for a more sustainable and inclusive world, demonstrating IDRC’s longstanding support of innovative, impactful, and actionable research solutions for climate-change adaptation. CLARE is also a strong demonstration of IDRC’s contribution to efforts by Canada and the UK to build global climate resilience and better adapt to a changing world.
