Recognizing and supporting those who provide care is a crucial foundation to address inequalities, enhance economic stability and build social cohesion.

IDRC supports research on care work, which can include caring for children and people who are sick, disabled and elderly as well as cleaning, cooking, fetching fuelwood and water, and gardening for household consumption. IDRC champions transformation towards equality in the care economy by supporting research and bringing the issue to international meetings such as the G20. The aim is to move toward comprehensive and accessible care systems that honour and support caregivers.

Building caring societies across the G20 and beyond

International conference on the sidelines of the summit
Wednesday, November 13, 2024

As part of Care 20, a collaborative group dedicated to advancing comprehensive care policies in G20 countries, IDRC is supporting this day-long conference on the sidelines of the G20 Social Summit. The conference features various IDRC-supported initiatives and research partners and serves as an opportunity to amplify the perspectives and needs of the Global South. Collaboration with representatives from South Africa will ensure that these efforts continue, as the G20 presidency transitions to that country in 2025.

The conference features the launch of the Global Roadmap for Action and a T20 policy brief outlining recommendations for valuing care as a key pillar in building resilient societies and achieving sustainable development. Two other announcements — the Care and Climate Fund and a care and climate policy brief — highlight the link between climate change and care work. Climate change increases the need for paid and unpaid care work and reduces access to natural resources, putting a strain on care responsibilities.

The event is co-hosted by Care 20 and led by the Centro de Implementación de Políticas Públicas para la Equidad y el Crecimiento and Southern Voice with support from IDRC, the Global Alliance for Care, W20 and T20, along with many other national and international organizations including UN Women, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Brazilian National Secretariat of Care, United Cities and Local Governments, the UN Research Institute for Social Development, Instituto Eqüit and Oxfam.

Making care a priority in G20 discussions

Thursday, November 14, 14:00 to 16:00 (BRT)
Espaço Kobra, Room K Primeiro 15

Through a series of dynamic sessions, this event will convene diverse voices — global leaders, grassroots activists, care workers and others — to share their perspectives, experiences and knowledge to propose solutions to care-related challenges from an intersectional lens. The activity will amplify the voices and lessons learned from the Global South, leveraging the G20 Global South troika of India, Brazil and South Africa.

The aim is to build bridges towards the G20 discussions in South Africa and expand the coalition of stakeholders committed to driving change. Rather than confining these conclusions to closed discussions, the goal is to foster an open, inclusive dialogue that involves the care economy and its stakeholders in all their diversity.
