Join us online on Monday, September 27 (8:00 to 9:30 a.m. EDT) for an official side event of the United Nations General Assembly, announcing the transfer of the Centre of Excellence for CRVS Systems (CoE) from IDRC to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Hosted by IDRC since 2015, the CoE has made great strides in advancing civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems through global leadership and technical cooperation. Now, we celebrate the CoE’s move to the UNFPA with the goal of assisting more nations to develop strong CRVS systems and reaching Target 16.9 of the Sustainable Development Goals (By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration).

This event, hosted by the UNFPA, IDRC, and the Government of Burkina Faso, focuses on the significance of civil registration and vital statistics systems in providing a legal identity for all and in promoting gender equality. It also marks the growth of the working partnership between the UNFPA, IDRC, Global Affairs Canada, and the Global Financing Facility.

Panelists will reflect on why we must invest in national data systems as well as the transformative potential of high-quality CRVS systems, especially for the lives of women and girls. Work to enhance CRVS at the national level will be underlined by representatives from the governments of Burkina Faso, Morocco, Colombia, and Lao PDR. The panel will also draw the links between CRVS, health systems, inclusivity, and women’s empowerment.

The event will be offered in English and French.
